Week 3 (Session 1 2009)

We had an exciting third week!  The highlight for everyone seemed to be making playdough together.  Each child was able to participate by adding different ingredients as the teachers mixed it together.  Throughout the week we used the playdough to make faces and other creations.

We also got to hear about Mayita’s place of birth in Guatemala! We loved learning more about her and her family.

Our focus words this week were: eyes, nose and mouth.  We took a picture of each child and cut it up into a simple puzzle which they were able to put together.  The kids enjoyed looking into little mirrors and making faces and talking about what they saw.  They also had fun looking at animal pictures and making the noises the animals make.

It is very rewarding, as we speak to the children in their second language, to have them respond.  Even if they do not respond in that language it is gratifying to realize that they are understanding what is being said to them and responding appropriately.  They are learning!

Semana 2 (Sesion 1, 2009)

Well, we are well into our second week of school.  We are having so much fun!  All the children are speaking more and using their second language during songs and group activities.  Really, ALL of them have at least put forth effort of speaking in their second language at one time or another.  We are so impressed!  We are talking about our bodies this week.  We have played many different games and sung many different songs about our bodies.  The kids love Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (Cabeza, Hombros, Rodillas y Pies).  We got great participation out of them when “Mr. Hungry Hand” wanted to eat their legs, arms, etc.!  They thought it was hilarious. We also used finger paint to make handprints that are hanging up at school.  Come check them out!
Gracias!

First Impressions

We successfully finished our second day of class!  It was a lot of fun!  The kids are getting to know each other and getting to know the classroom structure.  We have been focusing on three vocabulary words, red, yellow and blue (rojo, amarillo y azul).  Although some of the children are a little shy during their second language experiences, they are already learning and “testing out the water” with a few words.  They especially love to sing and dance!  We are already so proud of them and we love their individual personalities!  They are adorable.  We are looking forward to spending more time with them and watching them grow and learn.

Parental Involvement

Filed Under (Curriculum) by Kristen on 08-01-2009

Parental involvement is an important aspect of the Union Preschool philosophy.  We feel that children benefit from having their parents take an active role in their preschool experiences.  We’re not alone.  Joyce L. Epstein of Johns Hopkins University wrote:

“One major message of the early and continuing studies is simply and clearly that families are important for children’s learning, development, and school success across grades.  The research suggests that students at all grade levels do better academic work and have more positive school attitudes, higher aspirations, and other positive behaviors, if they have parents who are aware, knowledgeable, encouraging, and involved.”

This is why we have provided various opportunities for parents to become aware and knowledgeable about the overall goals, objectives, and philosophies through the parent orientation, the teacher’s blog, and the website.  We also hope that parents will take advantage of the opportunities provided to be involved and encouraging as they take part in the family focus days, fieldtrips, and performances.  We also welcome parents to observe or participate in the daily activities throughout the session.
